Storm Notice
The District has been watching the approach of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Isaias. We are taking precautions and removing all items that may cause damage from the forecasted winds. At this time, we have had to remove all items in our swap area and will not be taking in any items until after the storm. If you bring something for the swap area, please wait until Wednesday morning.
Additionally, while the Compost Station is not normally open on Tuesday mornings, we have decided to open it to allow people to get rid of any waste in the morning. As the winds increase through the day, the station may close due to safety reasons. Please keep this in mind and try to plan your visit for the morning.
As it currently stands, both Stations will be open on Wednesday morning.
Waste Oil
The Fishers Island Waste Management District purchased a waste oil furnace this past winter. Once installed, the District hopes to not only have lower heating costs but help island residents and businesses by having another source to discard waste oil.
In the past, one would have to hold on to waste oil to discard at the Household Hazardous Waste day, which occurs every two years. Now, you can call to make arrangements to bring your used oil to our shop. At this time, we have limited storage, so please call us before coming. We will ask how much you have and when the best time to bring it by. For more information, please call 788-7459.
And remember, Household Hazardous Waste Day is Saturday, August 8th, from 9 am until 12 pm, at the Transfer Station. During this time, normal trash and recyclables will not be accepted but will be open from 1 pm until 4:30 pm to handle this.
The Compost Station will not be open on Saturday, August 8th
